The illusion of time : past, present and future all exist together

    9:44

This video is from the documentary The Fabric of The Cosmos - for nonprofit educational purposes.
    ----
Please don't be misled by some comments below. This video does not say we can see future. It says Einstein's mathematical theory -which we later tested by clock experiment- also tells us that future and past always exist like the present! However, this does not necessitate pre-destination. Now is not deterministic as we know from Quantum Mechanics, so neither future nor past! Click to understand Quantum Mechanics. Wave functions evolve as time goes by. However, time does not collapse wave functions; observation collapses wave functions. Your wave function (which represents you) corresponding to your future has not collapsed yet. It will collapse in the future. As things in your life are probabilistic right now, they are probabilistic in the future too. Your past wave function has collapsed though. But your future one exists as a probability cloud in a sense.

    ----
A lot of people seem to have trouble understanding why illusion of time (illusion that past is gone, now exists, future has yet to come) does not necessitate predestination. I decided to add a comment from my exchange with axypolyas.

+axypolyas Not sure why you are bothered by all these; perhaps it is because of your choices in life. Let me tell you something which will bother you more. You might know already, however, anyone who is reading this exchange will highly likely not.

The scientific description of you, me and everything is energy. We don't know what energy is. We can quantify it, however, in essence what is it? we have no idea. And energy takes different forms, like elementary particles, which in turn become atoms, molecules and part of the end result is us. We know energy is governed by laws and constants which naturally takes us to the inevitable conclusion: we are governed by those constants and laws. Before discovery of quantum physics, this would mean we are completely deterministic objects. Quantum physics showed us that we are not 100% deterministic. We are limited by laws but still we are unpredictable (we can calculate probabilities of what we might do next, but we don't know what we will do next until we do it). What do all these mean for us? Who are we? or what are we? Why do atoms and molecules pile up and make us? to live longer? All the atoms in our bodies are almost 15 billions of years old. What we call life is just another state in which they continue existing; nothing more; nothing special about it. How can we make sense of all these? Can we make sense of all these? If we are only, and only, condensed energy, there is no such a thing as making sense of things. There is only energy going through one state to another state mindlessly. Pretty scary and dark explanation of our existence, is the pure scientific one.

Science is only a tool; only a methodology we use to make sense of the universe. It does not tell us why things are the way they are. It tells us how we can construct theories and how we can use methods to test them, so that, we can do all these in an objective way. Science is an extremely limited way of looking into existence. Are my feelings objective? No. Are they scientific? No. Or, should I greet my neighbour every morning? Should I have an extra spoon of ice cream today? Or why do we do science? Do we have to do science? Say for our survival? Our survival has no meaning given particles making up our physical bodies existed for billions of years and they will continue to exist, perhaps longer.

I will jump to my personal understanding, rather than destroying ourselves using science. To me, existence of The Creator makes more sense than anything else, including my own existence. The Creator, who logically must (and interestingly described as such in Islam which I have chosen as a path to follow) be All-Knowing, All-Powerful, capable of creating a free agent (my soul for example) with life, creating a universe in which those free agents can grow up, examine, study, learn, make sense of it... freely... is the only logical answer I can think of. We don't see the Creator, or souls, or anything which would force us to believe and accept. Creator made us free and as part of making that choice freely, we will always be bothered by our existence, but we will never find an answer. That will remain as a matter of choice and it has always been like that.

The knowledge of truth as such is wonderful, but it is so little capable of acting as a guide that it cannot prove even the justification and the value of the aspiration toward that very knowledge of truth. Here we face, therefore, the limits of the purely rational conception of our existence. -- Albert Einstein

Brian Greene: Time Travel is Possible

    4:59

Is the time we experience in our day-to-day lives real? Theoretical physicist Brian Green explores the potential particles of time and why we could, in theory, travel forward in time but not back.

Transcript - We know a lot about time. We know that time in some sense is at rock bottom that which allows change to take place, right. When we say that time has elapsed we notice that because things now are different from how they were a little while ago. That’s what we mean by time elapsing. But is time some fundamental quality of reality or is it something that our brains impose on our perceptions to organize our experience into some coherent framework that allows us to survive. I mean I can well imagine that we have been under evolutionary pressure over the millennia to organize perception so that we can survive, get the next meal, plan for the future. All of that would seemingly require that we have a conception of time that we apply to what we experience out there. But that doesn’t mean time as we experience it is real. It doesn’t mean that time as we experience it is how the world is actually structured. I mean there are many ideas that people put forward. The possibility for instance that, you know, we all know that matter is made of molecules and atoms. Could it be that time is also made of some kind of ingredient? A molecule of time? An atom of time? Is that really what time is at a fundamental level?

Time travel is absolutely possible. And this is not some sort of weird sci-fi thing that I’m talking about here. Albert Einstein taught us more than 100 years ago that time travel is possible if you’re focusing upon time travel to the future. And I’m not referring to the silly thing that we all age, right. We’re all going into the future. Sure, I’m talking about if you wanted to leapfrog into the future, if you wanted to see what the Earth will be like a million years from now, Albert Einstein told us how to do that. In fact he told us two ways of how to do it. You can build a spaceship, go out into space near the speed of light, turn around and come back. Imagine you go out for six months and you turn around and you come back for six months. You will be one year older. But he taught us that your time is elapsing much slower than time back on Earth. So when you step out of your ship you’re one year older but Earth has gone through many, many years. It can have gone through 10,000, 100,000 or a million years depending on how close to the speed of light you traveled.

And he also taught us if you go and hang out near the edge of a black hole time again will elapse more slowly for you at the edge of the black hole than back on Earth. So you hang out there for a while, you come back and again you get out of your ship and it will be any number of years into the future, whatever you want all depending on how close you got to the edge of the black hole and how long you hung out there. That is time travel to the future. Now of course what people really want to know about is getting back. Can you travel back to the past? I don’t think so. We don’t know for sure. No one has given a definitive proof that you can’t travel to the past. In fact, some very reputable scientists have suggested ways that you might travel to the past. But every time we look at the proposals and detail it seems kind of clear that they’re right at the edge of the known laws of physics. And most of us feel that when physics progresses to a point that we understand things even better, these proposals just will be ruled out, they won’t work. But I guess I would say there’s a long shot possibility based on what we know today that time travel to the past might be possible. But most of us wouldn’t bet our life on it.

Directed / Produced by Jonathan Fowler, Elizabeth Rodd, and Aaron Lehmann

One of the most ambitious and exciting theories ever proposed—one that may be the long-sought theory of everything, which eluded even Einstein—gets a masterful, lavishly computer-animated explanation from bestselling author-physicist Brian Greene, when NOVA presents the nuts, bolts, and sometimes outright nuttiness of string theory.

Also known as superstring theory, the startling idea proposes that the fundamental ingredients of nature are inconceivably tiny strings of energy, whose different modes of vibration underlie everything that happens in the universe. The theory successfully unites the laws of the large—general relativity—and the laws of the small—quantum mechanics—breaking a conceptual logjam that has frustrated the world's smartest scientists for nearly a century.

Space and Time into a single Continuum

    10:57

    Program Description

Eleven dimensions, parallel universes, and a world made out of strings? It's not science fiction, it's string theory. Bestselling author and physicist Brian Greene offers a tour of this seemingly strange world in The Elegant Universe, a three-hour Peabody Award-winning miniseries.

Part 1, Einstein's Dream, introduces string theory and shows how modern physics—composed of two theories that are ferociously incompatible—reached its schizophrenic impasse: One theory, general relativity, successfully describes big things like stars and galaxies, while another, quantum mechanics, is equally successful at explaining small things like atoms and subatomic particles. Albert Einstein, the inventor of general relativity, dreamed of finding a single theory that would embrace all of nature's laws. But in this quest for the so-called unified theory, Einstein came up empty-handed, and the conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics has stymied all who've followed. That is, until the discovery of string theory.

Is our universe the only universe? - Brian Greene

    21:48

Is there more than one universe? In this visually rich, action-packed talk, Brian Greene shows how the unanswered questions of physics (starting with a big one: What caused the Big Bang?) have led to the theory that our own universe is just one of many in the multiverse.

    Talk by Brian Greene.

Brian Greene and Alan Alda Discuss Why Einstein Hated Quantum Mechanics

    15:14

Albert Einstein was not a fan of quantum mechanics. He was annoyed by the uncertain, random nature of the universe it implied (hence the famous quote God does not play dice with the universe). So, Einstein tried to develop a unified theory that would circumvent what he saw as quantum mechanics' flaws. In this excerpt from the 2014 World Science Festival Program Dear Albert, Alan Alda and Brian Greene discuss Einstein's relationship with the unruly child of quantum mechanics, and how the famed physicist came up with the Special Theory of Relativity.

Physics buffs, you will love this compilation. Columbia University professor Brian Greene is mind blowingly awesome in this fascinating compilation on quantum mechanics, time, string theory, the Higgs Boson, Einstein and more. Brian Greene's area of expertise is on string theory, which is a leading candidate for a unifying theory of quantum gravity. String theory attempts to explain the different particle species of the standard model of particle physics as different aspects of a single type of one-dimensional, vibrating string.

Brian Greene is going to let you in on a secret: We've all been deceived. Our perceptions of time and space have led us astray. Much of what we thought we knew about our universe - that the past has already happened and the future is yet to be, that space is just an empty void, that our universe is the only universe that exists, just might be wrong.

Interweaving provocative theories, experiments, and stories with crystal-clear explanations and imaginative metaphors like those that defined the groundbreaking and highly acclaimed series The Elegant Universe, The Fabric of the Cosmos aims to be the most compelling, visual, and comprehensive picture of modern physics ever seen on television. Full Documentary 53 minutes.

A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record.[1] Such films were originally shot on film stock—the only medium available—but now includes video and digital productions that can be either direct-to-video, made into a TV show or released for screening in cinemas. Documentary has been described as a filmmaking practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception that is continually evolving and is without clear boundaries.more info visit:
