In the series The Secret Life of a Food Stamp, Marketplace reporter Krissy Clark traces how big-box stores make billions from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka food stamps. What's more, the wages of many workers at these stores are so low that the workers themselves qualify for food stamps—which the employees then often spend at those big-box stores.

This video crunches the numbers on how much Walmart, the single biggest beneficiary of the food stamp economy, might have to raise prices across the board to help a typical worker earn a living wage.

A note on methodology: Eligibility for food stamps varies according to income, number of dependents, and other factors. This estimate of Walmart's potential cost from raising wages is based on wages for a Walmart employee with one dependent working 30 hours a week, a typical retail worker based on federal data.

Mathematics and sex are deeply intertwined. From using mathematics to reveal patterns in our sex lives, to using sex to prime our brain for certain types of problems, to understanding them both in terms of the evolutionary roots of our brain, Dr Clio Cresswell shares her insight into it all.

Dr Clio Cresswell is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at The University of Sydney researching the evolution of mathematical thought and the role of mathematics in society. Born in England, she spent part of her childhood on a Greek island, and was then schooled in the south of France where she studied Visual Art. At eighteen she simultaneously discovered the joys of Australia and mathematics, following on to win the University Medal and complete a PhD in mathematics at The University of New South Wales. Communicating mathematics is her field and passion. Clio has appeared on panel shows commenting, debating and interviewing; authored book reviews and opinion pieces; joined breakfast radio teams and current affair programs; always there highlighting the mathematical element to our lives. She is author of Mathematics and Sex.

The speed of light. Nothing with mass can travel faster, and because of this limit, interstellar travel towards stars more than a hundred lightyears away seems problematic, and downright impossible for galaxies that are upwards of millions of lightyears away. But what if we could cheat physics? The theory of special relativity forbids any object from moving at light speed. It doesn’t matter how small it is, how much weight it’s lost recently thanks to its fancy new diet, it is physically impossible for anything of mass to haul ass directly from A to B at faster-than-light speed. The idea of wormholes being used to cross the galaxy at faster-than-light speed has been discussed at length by sci-fi authors and guys who live in their mom’s basement for decades now. In real life, teleportation does not work in the same way it does in the movies. Whereas in Star Trek you can shoot blue lasers at something, dissolve it and have it reappear at another point in space, in reality, what you’ve just done is destroy the original object and make a copy.

Exploding real estate prices, zero interest rate and a rising stock market – the rich are getting richer. What danger lies in wait for average citizens?

For years, the world’s central banks have been pursuing a policy of cheap money. The first and foremost is the ECB (European Central Bank), which buys bad stocks and bonds to save banks, tries to fuel economic growth and props up states that are in debt. But what relieves state budgets to the tune of hundreds of billions annoys savers: interest rates are close to zero.

The fiscal policies of the central banks are causing an uncontrolled global deluge of money. Experts are warning of new bubbles. In real estate, for example: it’s not just in German cities that prices are shooting up. In London, a one-bed apartment can easily cost more than a million Euro. More and more money is moving away from the real economy and into the speculative field. Highly complex financial bets are taking place in the global casino - gambling without checks and balances. The winners are set from the start: in Germany and around the world, the rich just get richer. Professor Max Otte says: This flood of money has caused a dangerous redistribution. Those who have, get more. But with low interest rates, any money in savings accounts just melts away. Those with debts can be happy. But big companies that want to swallow up others are also happy: they can borrow cheap money for their acquisitions. Coupled with the liberalization of the financial markets, money deals have become detached from the real economy. But it’s not just the banks that need a constant source of new, cheap money today. So do states. They need it to keep a grip on their mountains of debt. It’s a kind of snowball system. What happens to our money? Is a new crisis looming? The film 'The Money Deluge' casts a new and surprising light on our money in these times of zero interest rates.

In 1957, Mikhail Tal played a training game that sparkled of tactics against his trainer, Alexander Koblents. The Magician from Riga met Koblents's Sicilian Defense with the Richter-Rauzer Attack. In a game of opposite sides castling, initiative is king and Tal understood this game element likely better than anyone else. It's impressive to observe so many of Tal's pieces in jeopardy, yet they cannot all be taken in just one move of course, or even be safely captured without negative consequence. One of Tal's most famous chess quotes is You must take your opponent into a deep, dark forest where 2+2=5 and the path leading out is only wide enough for one. Mikhail Tal certainly took Alexander Koblents into the forest, and what resulted was one highly complex masterpiece of a game. Mikhail Tal quite simply is one of the best, if not the best, tactical geniuses to have ever played the game.
