ALERT: 6.2 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE OFF THE COAST OF JAPAN

A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Japan near Fukushima.

Details of the extent of the damage have not yet emerged regarding the quake which hit 281km South East of Kamaishi.

The depth of the earthquake, which struck at 2.37am local time, was measured at 10km.

AN earthquake has struck off the east coast of Japan - just 320 kilometres east of Fukushima nuclear plant. The tremor is said to have had a magnitude of 6.1, according to the US Geological Society (USGS): Prelim M6.1 earthquake off the east coast of Honshu, Japan Sep-20 16:37 UTC, updates

The American scientific agency, which tracks natural disasters around the world, said the quake happened 281 kilometres from Fukushima nuclear power plant. The Japan Meteorological Agency said no tsunami warning was in effect and the USGS said only weak shaking would have been felt on Honshu and the risk of damage was likely to be minor.

The Japanese coast guard released a video on Saturday showing the massive tsunami waves swelling in the sea off the coast of northern Japan, after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck offshore on March 11. The footage showed the first huge wave rising up above the prow of the coastguard ship as it sailed straight towards it. Two more waves followed.

A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes on record slammed Japan's eastern coast on Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away ships, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control. Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicentre. Another 137 were confirmed killed, with 531 people missing. Police also said 544 people were injured.

A 6.9-greatness tremor has been accounted for in Fukushima, Japan, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors from the quake could be felt as far away as Tokyo. Perilous wave waves are feasible for parts of Japan's east drift inside 300 kilometers (around 186 miles) of the quake's epicenter, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. There is no torrent risk to Hawaii.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand on Wednesday followed by others off the coasts of Japan (6.1), Vanuatu (6.4), and Indonesia (5.7) early Thursday morning.
All were along the 'Ring of Fire' that stretches around the Pacific from New Zealand to Chile through Indonesia, Japan, and California, across which 90 per cent of quakes happen.
There was also a big earthquake in Mexico City that killed more than 230, but despite the country falling in the 'Ring', experts ruled out a connection to the other quakes.

El terremoto ocurrió a las 14:46:23 hora local (05:46:23 UTC) del viernes 11 de marzo de 2011. El epicentro del terremoto se ubicó en el mar, frente a la costa de Honshu, 130 km al este de Sendai, en la prefectura de Miyagi, Japón, a una profundidad de 32 kilómetros. El terremoto y tsunami de Japón de 2011, denominado oficialmente por la Agencia Meteorológica de Japón como el terremoto de la costa del Pacífico en la región de Tōhoku de 2011 (東北地方太平洋沖地震 Tōhoku Chihō Taiheiyō-oki Jishin5 ?) o Gran terremoto de Japón oriental (東日本大震災 Higashi-Nihon Dai-shinsai) del 11 de marzo, fue un terremoto de magnitud 9,0 MW1 6 que creó olas de maremoto de hasta 40,5 metros7 . El terremoto ocurrió a las 14:46:23 hora local (05:46:23 UTC) del viernes 11 de marzo de 2011. El epicentro del terremoto se ubicó en el mar, frente a la costa de Honshu, 130 km al este de Sendai, en la prefectura de Miyagi, Japón, a una profundidad de 32 kilómetros. El terremoto duró aproximadamente 6 minutos según los sismólogos.8 El USGS explicó que el terremoto ocurrió a causa de un desplazamiento en proximidades de la zona de la interfase entre placas de subducción entre la placa del Pacífico y la placa Norteamericana. En la latitud en que ocurrió este terremoto, la placa del Pacífico se desplaza en dirección oeste con respecto a la placa Norteamericana a una velocidad de 83 mm/año. La placa del Pacífico se mete debajo de Japón en la fosa de Japón, y se hunde en dirección oeste debajo de Asia1 .

Dos días antes, este terremoto había sido precedido por otro temblor importante, pero de menor magnitud, ocurrido el miércoles 9 de marzo de 2011, a las 02: UTC en la misma zona de la costa oriental de Honshū, Japón y que tuvo una magnitud de 7,2 MW a una profundidad de 14,1 kilómetros. También ese día las autoridades de la Agencia Meteorológica de Japón dieron una alerta de maremoto, pero sólo local, para la costa este de ese país. El 1 de febrero había entrado en actividad el volcán Shinmoe en la provincia de Miyazaki, todo esto indica un reactivamiento de la tectónica previo al terremoto.9

La magnitud de 9,0 MW lo convirtió en el terremoto más potente sufrido en Japón hasta la fecha7 así como el cuarto más potente del mundo de todos los terremotos medidos hasta la fecha.10 11 Desde 1973 la zona de subducción de la fosa de Japón ha experimentado nueve eventos sísmicos de magnitud 7 o superior. El mayor fue un terremoto ocurrido en diciembre de 1994 que tuvo una magnitud de 7,8, con epicentro a unos 260 km al norte del terremoto del 11 de marzo de 2011, el cual causó 3 muertos y unos 300 heridos.
