    [ Are you stuck in the performance game? Does every conversation or interaction you have feel like it has to live up to something? Do you constantly feel like you're being evaluated?

    Today, we’re going to discuss various ways to become more relaxed around other people so that you can start putting yourself out there and stop judging everything you do.

    The first thing you have to understand is that talking to people is not a performance. Many of us approach conversation as if we’re being graded on it . . . usually by ourselves. If you feel tense or pressured or if you’re “observing” yourself while you're having a conversation, that’s how you know you're in performance mode.

    It doesn’t stop there, either! Most of the time, we also take a moment to analyzing ourselves after the conversation is complete: Was I good enough? Did I say the right things? Were they reacting to me well?

    Performance mode is problematic for a number of reasons: Firstly, when you're in performance mode, you're on the spot. You're being evaluated. It’s similar to the mentality of taking an exam. When you’re taking an exam, are you spontaneous and fun and witty and humorous, or are you closed off and nervous and stilted and awkward? Option B, right?

    Performance mode puts us in the mind frame of thinking things have to go a certain way or the conversation is a failure. When we start to think things aren’t going right, we freeze up and become tense . . . and the people around us can feel it. While that may not be a complete deal-breaker, it may push people away or detract from the outcome that you want in a given situation.

    Another important factor to consider is that in performance mode, your focus us completely on you: How am I doing? What do I look like? What do people think of me? You become obsessed with your own presence. Guess what happens when we let that happen? We completely ignore the other person’s presence. Would you want to have a conversation with someone who was ignoring your presence?

    This is the same for everything from a casual date to an important sales meeting:

    The people we’re talking to want our attention! They want us to know we’re focused on them and their needs.

    When we place the focus on ourselves, it kills our ability to do whatever we’re there to do.

    Why is it so difficult to take the focus off of ourselves when we’re in a conversation? Well, in part, it’s because we’ve got our priorities misaligned: Conversation isn’t about proving something—it’s about connection.

    Dr. Ivan Joseph, Ph.D, leads individuals, teams, and organizations to success. While serving as a professor and soccer coach at Graceland University (a century-old liberal arts university in southern Iowa), he developed the soccer program from the ground up, leading both the men's and women's teams to a #1 national ranking and the men's team to a National Championship, in just five years. The NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) recognized Dr. Joseph as National Coach of the Year in 2006, and three times he received Coach of the Year recognition in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

    In his current role as Director of Athletics at Ryerson University in Toronto, Dr. Joseph is guiding the transformation of the Ryerson Rams athletic department, raising the academic average of athletes, increasing team performance, and he has recently completed a $100 million dollar renovation of historic Maple Leaf Gardens--a project so big and inspiring, Prime Minister Stephen Harper himself showed up to turn on the lights.

    An educator and organizational leader who has brought about cultural transformation, Dr. Joseph is a sought after speaker on developing personal and organizational leadership. He speaks about self-confidence, the grit to persevere in spite of setbacks, and leading teams to success. Dynamic and inspiring, the stories and lessons he shares apply to business and to life.

    The best way to build your self-confidence is by understanding the two core elements that create it. No one is born with self-confidence; it is acquired. And self-confidence is not global -- it tends to be situational. Self-confidence is a vibration of energy in your body that makes you calm and grounded when attempting a task. The negative vibration of being worried, anxious, or entertaining negative visualizations indicates a lack of confidence.

    Virtually everyone is confident of their abilities in some arena. Those who appear the most magnificently self-confident have likely had lots of experience at the particular skill you're observing right now. They likely suck at other tasks that you haven't witnessed. Skill mastery contributes greatly to self-confidence.

    The longer someone has been doing something, the more confident they'll likely become. Remember that most Olympic figure skaters or gymnasts started as young children. To achieve self-confidence in a skill, you must commit to the action to flawlessly acquire it.

    But self-confidence, beyond mastery of an external skill, also requires the element of internal psychology. Those who perform flawlessly, and yet struggle internally, may need to address issues of personal development, possibly anxiety or neuroses. They may need to mitigate limiting beliefs that are sabotaging their performance.

    To improve your self-confidence, address both the external and internal variables.

    so too must we if we hope to master being a present, connected and successful person and professional.

    Practitioners of presence, connection and self-optimization of our human instrument is the only path that leads to any level of mastery as a person or professional.

    Remain mindful of the thoughts, beliefs, behaviors and actions you choose throughout each day. Which leads to the next tip:

    2.Optimism.
    Look forward to each day with enthusiasm and positive certainty and expectation.

    Whenever you find yourself looking for or expecting bad things, make a habit of asking yourself “what is potentially positive about this? How can I make this a win for all affected?”

    Studies show optimists are happier, more successful and healthier. Things we all likely desire.

    3. Appetite for Risk.
    We naturally avoid risk.
    Our brains are engineered for this.

    Set unreasonable, challenging, but attainable boundaries and goals for yourself.

    We have to think and do in life, right?
    So, why not think and do BIG!
    What do we have to lose?

    Make a playful habit of moving outside of your comfort zone in the direction of your dreams.
    Literally play with it and make it stimulating and fun.

    4. Daily Celebration and Reward.
    Congratulate and reward your little wins along the way.
    Celebrate little milestones along the way.

    This will cause your brain to associate pleasurable states to positive action and direction.

    5. Smile. Literally.
    Smile a lot.
    Have a playful attitude.
    Manufacture smiles.

    Don’t wait for something to happen outside to smile inside.

    A lot of people lack self-confidence. Over and over, especially nowadays, we see more and more people complaining about all of those things, having a lot of difficulties building self-trust, self-worthiness, and self-confidence.

    However, there are also other types of people: who THINK that they are confident, but they really aren't. Most people build something inside them that looks more like arrogance than with confidence. And this is definitely a trap you should be avoiding.

    There is what I call TRUE self-confidence which is definitely something you should be aware and should be aiming when it comes to developing yourself.

    Do you frequently feel uncomfortable inside social environments? Do you want to know how to have self confidence? Perhaps you are overly shy? Or your stomach ties up in knots when approaching someone even just to say Hi!

    Well the great news is the fact that there are lots of methods which you are able to use that will help you overcome this problem of social shyness or anxiety. I'm going to share one of my favorites below. But first, we will talk about 3 essential points that have to be highlighted (so imagine them covered with ink from a vibrant yellow Fluoro highlighter pen...or what the heck I can actually do this myself)

    1. Do not expect waking up with the confidence of Tony Robbins overnight. All changes happen in little small steps and actions. Make the effort to push yourself slowly just a bit every day. And celebrate your victories, no matter how little they're. These small victories will help you grow into a more confident person.

    2. The very best way to overcome a fear is by facing it. What I'm presenting here is the 1 method to develop the courage to face your fear. What you'll need to do though is not only use it and stop here, but also search out an entire artillery technique also. And use them! Some methods may be more suitable for certain situations. I'll give you more tips on this in a future article.

    3. As always, if your social shyness or anxiousness is causing BIG problems and difficulties in your life, please consider speaking to a doctor or a specialist. They will be able to expand on this technique, and offer you with many more. They really can help.
    So, as promised, here's certainly one of my favorite techniques for helping you really feel more confident as around other individuals in a social scenario. It is extremely powerful and effective.

    That power is compassion.

    It resides inside all of us, although it lies asleep in the majority of people; it's almost as a luxury we feel we cannot afford just yet. Perhaps something we'll get about to explore when we get over our problems and start feeling happy about ourselves. But, how can we be compassionate towards others when we do not even really feel great about ourselves?

    Is that what you believe?
    Well, I think we're better off by taking a look at issues from a different perspective. One that sees compassion not only as a tool for helping others, but additionally for helping ourselves.

    So, how do we use compassion within this situation?
    SEE THE OTHER People as if you're looking at a mirror. They are JUST LIKE YOU!
    They're human. Somewhere within them they have fears, problems and concerns too. Their fears might not be visible to you on the surface, but they're there. We're all human. They are also stuck in the same box of society and this strange and challenging life. We are all trying to survive in this jungle.

    All of us desire human contact!
    We all want friendship!
    We all desire to be loved!

    So before approaching somebody, remind yourself that they as well might have difficulties relating to others. They might be waiting for someone to talk to about their issues and their concerns. They might be waiting for someone just like you, who can comprehend them and accept the with all their fears. Someone just like you, having a heart filled with compassion and love. And perhaps in time, if a friendship develops, you will be able to help them immensely in the future.

    Why does this work? Merely because it takes away the attention off you, and places it onto the other individual. How are you able to help them? How can you be their friend in a time of need?

    Obviously, do not force yourself towards them with these concerns straight. It really doesn't matter what happens after. But it's logical to see that it would not be suitable in most social circumstances to try to act as Mother Teresa around someone, especially in the event you don't know the person. Just focus and try to create a space for them, so they might understand or perceive that they're just like you. They as well are human.
    Now that you know How To Have Self Confidence, go ahead and begin the conversation.
    Talk to them, learn about them, and their interests. This may lead nowhere or probably, it could develop into one of the best friendships of your life. No one knows.
    They're just like you. So there's no need to be afraid. They also want somebody to talk to. Help yourself by helping them!

    You could let your shyness or anxiousness be a negative force of fear inside yourself, or you use it to let it build your compassion towards others who are also facing their very own demons. Choose compassion! In return, you'll also be helping yourself to grow as a person and open your heart, this way effortlessly overcoming your own fears, one conversation at a time.
