Serial Podcast Leakin Park Animation Adnan Syed Jay Jenn

    1:44

Most people agree that Jay is a notorious liar. While that does not mean that everything he said in relation to Hae's murder must be untrue (at least the jury thought so), i decided to try a little experiment:

Is the theory of Adnan Syed burying Hae's body in Leakin Park (and thus being involved in her murder) still supported by the other evidence available after disregarding Jay's testimony?
This animation takes into account Adnan's call logs, AT&T expert witness's tower testing data as well as Jenn's and other eyewitness's testimony.

    Who Murdered Hae Min Lee?

    50

On Thursday, Adnan Syed was given a new trial by a Baltimore judge. Syed was the subject of popular podcast Serial's first season. His conviction for murdering ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999 has been set aside. For the past 16 years, Syed's attorneys have been arguing his case in court hoping for a fair trial, and now Syed is hopefully getting one. Now, public interest has been renewed in the circumstances of Lee's murder, and there is definitely no shortage of theories from Internet users.

Revisiting the crime scenes featured in season 1 of Serial

    2:27

It’s a true crime story that captivated a nation, and even though its final episode aired in December, season one of the podcast “Serial” continues to make news. At the heart of the story is Adnan Syed, convicted in 1999 of killing his high school girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. Justin George, a Baltimore Sun reporter who was featured on the podcast, took NewsHour’s William Brangham on a tour of the spots in Woodlawn, Maryland, that were featured in Serial.

Featured in this tour are: The Best Buy parking lot, where the prosecution alleges Syed took Lee to murder her in her car; Leakin Park, where Lee’s body was found buried behind a log; and The Woodlawn Public Library, where McClain says she saw Syed during the time the prosecution said Lee was being murdered.

Serial Podcasts Adnan Syed Granted New Trial

    55

A Maryland judge on Thursday ordered a new trial for Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was put into question by the 2014 podcast Serial. Syed is serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee, who was 18 at the time of her death. Syed was convicted in 2000 of murdering her. According to Reuters, Syed's lawyers had sought a new trial amid questions about the fairness of the case that were raised by the podcast in late 2014. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Martin Welch ordered Syed's conviction vacated because of ineffective legal help. During the hearing, Syed's lawyers had argued that Cristina Gutierrez had failing skills when she originally defended him. She was later disbarred, and died in 2004.

How are we supposed to make sense of Jay?

    Serials Adnan Syed Requests Bail

Adnan Syed, the subject of the popular Serial podcast, has asked to be released from prison on bail while he waits for a new trial. Defense attorney Justin Brown said, in documents filed in Baltimore City Circuit Court, that Syed posed no danger to the community. He said, Syed has now served more than 17 years in prison based on an unconstitutional conviction for a crime he did not commit. In June, a judge ruled that the now 35-year-old deserved a new trial after being convicted in 2000 of murdering his high school girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in January 1999.

If you havn't watched the Serial Podcast, I highly recommend you checkout an episode or two and I gurantee you will be hooked. It's a radio show/podcast which covers a story over the course of a number of weeks.

I used to wonder how people in the old days could listen to radio shows and find them entertaining. After listening to the Serial Podcast on a recent roadtrip I see how, I was hooked just a few minutes into my first episode.

The first season is a story about a High School girl who goes missing. Her high school boyfriend winds up being convicted for the murder despite no physical evidence and a purely circumstantial case. Over the course of the episodes and weeks you go back and forth from thining he's innocent and then guilty. It really does keep you on the edge of your seat.

Season 2 is the Bo Bergdahl story. The US Army Soldier who walked off his base in Afghanistan and was captured by the Taliban. The story each week covers his leaving, his capture, and how the military should deal with his discipline. It also discusses whether he was a trader, a deserter, or just crazy.

The Secret Sauce of Great Audio: Serial and the Podcast Explosion | Journalism+Design

    3:11

Sarah Koenig, Alex Blumberg, Benjamin Walker, and Alix Spiegel with David Carr discuss the secrets behind making a great Podcast. Watch the full video here:

The Journalism and Design Program at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts ( is proud to host this conversation with David Carr of The New York Times and Lack Professor of Media Studies at Boston University moderating a discussion with Sarah Koenig, host and producer of Serial, Alex Blumberg, creator of the podcast StartUp, former producer of This American Life, and founder of NPR's Planet Money, Benjamen Walker, host of the podcast Theory of Everything and one of the founding members of Radiotopia, and Alix Spiegel, a founding producer of This American Life and co-host of the New NPR series Invisibilia, about the unprecedented popularity of Serial, the creative explosion currently taking place in podcasting, and what it all means for the industry.

Since its October debut, Serial has taken the podcasting world by storm. A spinoff of the public radio show This American Life, Serial is now the world's most popular podcast, with more than 5 million downloads and 1.5 million listeners per episode, according to iTunes. While this fame is partially due to the show's intriguing tale of a real-life murder case from 1999, it also speaks volumes about the public's growing interest in podcasts.

Sponsored by Journalism + Design ( a new interdisciplinary undergraduate program at The New School merging design thinking with time-tested journalistic principles and practice.
