101 East - Plastic Surgery: South Korea

    25:16

Plastic Surgery: The Cost of Beauty

Seoul, South Korea's capital, is at the heart of a growing obsession to look perfect.

In the Apgujeong district of Seoul, the streets are lined with endless rows of plastic surgery clinics. Business is booming. In South Korea, v-shaped jaws, double eyelids and dimpled smiles are all the rage and people from across the nation, and the world, are flocking to the clinics for plastic surgery, supporting an industry worth $5bn a year.

More than 4,000 clinics provide cosmetic surgery in Seoul, with an estimated 650,000 people a year going under the knife.

But the surgeries performed by some of the clinics do not always live up to patients' expectations and the quest for beauty and profits is putting lives at risk.

So Yi Yoon has suffered many medical problems since having plastic surgery, including not being able to close one of her eyes. She now works two jobs to pay off her debts and is suffering from depression.

On this edition of 101 East, we look at what is driving the growth of this booming business and at what price to individuals and the wider Korean society?

101 East delves into Korea's plastic surgery craze and uncovers the real price of pursuing physical perfection.

10 Weirdest Reasons Teenagers Got Suspended From School

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to social media and news outlets, we are more aware of the bizarre world around us. We even get to see the crazy lives of modern teenagers. From buying a chicken nugget to texting in class, these are ten weirdest reasons teens got suspended from school.

A Tennessee teen was extra hungry at school one day. To remedy his hunger, he grabbed an extra chicken nugget from his school’s cafeteria. When a worker noticed the teen’s extra food, he was charged more, and gladly coughed up the cash. So, imagine his surprise when he ended his meal with a suspension from the school’s principal.

School dress codes are in place for a reason, but that doesn’t mean we have to always agree with them. When a high school honor student wore a shirt that her principal didn’t like, she was suspended and even unable to walk in her high school graduation. When you see the shirt, you can decide for yourself if it was worthy of such harsh punishment.

Texting in school isn’t usually allowed, but that doesn’t keep teens from doing it. One teens text landed her in handcuffs and suspended from school. All this because she panicked during a school lockdown, and texted her father. He then shared the lockdown on Facebook, causing panic in the rest of the community.

10 Strangest Reasons Kids Toys Were BANNED In Schools

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every kid has a favorite toy, whether it’s Pogs, Silly Bandz, or even Laser Pointers. So which one is yours: Heelys, Tamagotchis, or Pokémon Cards? No matter which toy is your favorite, you’d probably be pretty baffled to hear that some of them have actually been banned from schools around the world!

Some of these toys are so innocent that we just couldn’t believe that they were banned from anywhere, let alone schools. In 2013, just as rainbow Loom Bracelet kits were becoming incredibly popular, some teachers decided that they just did not belong in schools. The parents of the students certainly did not agree, and they had a pretty epic back-and-forth about it! Could a little creativity really hurt the kids?

We were actually pretty astounded to see that not all of the things on this list are even traditionally used as a toy! A perfect example is the water bottle — do you know how people have been using these modern marvels as toys in and out of the classroom? Well, once you do, you may have a better sense for why they were banned!

So, which toy is your favorite? Is it the Fidget Spinner? Well, if so, you won’t believe the reason that some schools decided to ban them! We won’t ruin the surprise, but we will say that some schools actually considered these little toys to be dangerous! Next time I'll try to make better videos and if you have anything you want to know about Korea, tell me, and I'll try to make videos about it!

My life in North Korea vs South Korea

    15:28

One year ago I went on a strictly guided 7 day-tour in North Korea where they took away my passport and did not allow me to explore anything on my own. North Korea was definitely the weirdest country I had ever visited and throughout that trip I kept wondering what life was like in the neighboring South Korea, because it used to be the same country just over 60 years ago.

To answer my questions, this year I traveled to South Korea and made this video, where I compare my time in the North and my time in the South. I still have a lot of questions about the whole situation, but one thing was clear - the daily lives of the Korean people couldn't be any more different than they are right now.

My favorite books about North Korea:

Dear Leader by Jang Jin Sung -
Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden -
Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick -
1984 by George Orwell (I couldn't believe how similar some things in North Korea felt to the ones in the book) -

When it comes to education in South Korea, the demand is so strong it accounts for 12% of all consumer spending.
Parents push their children relentlessly, with classes in the evenings and at weekends. It's led to some teachers earning very high salaries, particularly to teach English. The BBC's Steve Evans, in Seoul, met one of them.

BBC News Is South Korean education best in world?

    3:25

New international league tables on education are expected to make disappointing reading for many British parents.

The tables, which focus on the teaching of maths, will be published on Tuesday.

The last similar survey showed the UK in 28th position out of 65 countries - and the latest figures are unlikely to show much improvement.

The best results are expected to come from East Asian countries such as China, Singapore and South Korea.

But there can be heavy costs and extremely long hours for students in South Korea.

    Reeta Chakrabarti reports from Seoul.

Can you imagine our world in 2050? By mid-century there will likely be 9 billion people on the planet, consuming ever more resources and leading ever more technologically complex lives. What will our cities be like? How will we eat in the future of Earth? Will global warming trigger catastrophic changes, or will we be able to engineer our way out of the world climate crisis?

In the future world demographic changes will certainly be dramatic. Rockefeller University mathematical biologist Joel Cohen says it's likely that by 2050 the majority of the people in the world will live in urban areas of the earth, and will have a significantly higher average age than people today.

South Koreas Solo Mums -101 East

South Korea's Solo Mums -101 East

What drives single mothers in South Korea to abandon their babies
    ?
Park Da Hoon was 25 when she became pregnant and her boyfriend left her. She hid her pregnancy from her colleagues and parents, and gave birth in a hospital alone. Park says her family would have made her abort the baby. Abortion is illegal in South Korea unless under exceptional circumstances, but an estimated 300,000 cases take place every year.

Soon after childbirth, Park left her baby at a church in Seoul.More than 500 other desperate mothers have done so since 2009, after the pastor, Lee Jong Rak, set up a baby drop box in response to news of many abandoned newborns. He offers the mothers counselling and gives their babies temporary refuge.

Seen as irresponsible and unreliable, single mothers like Park suffer social discrimination. She even lost her job for not fitting in with company values.

Her parents eventually let her retrieve her daughter but she is among the lucky ones. The stigma against unwed mums is so strong in South Korea that most of them either give up their children or are left to raise them with minimal support. Children born out of wedlock are also ostracised in school.

In 2012, the Korean government passed a controversial adoption law intended to make it easier for children to find their birth parents and to deter unwed mums from giving up their newborns. The law makes it compulsory for a single mum to nurse for seven days before deciding whether to keep her child. She also has to register the birth in official records. Giving a baby up for adoption now requires consent from both the baby's parents and sometimes grandparents.

Pastor Lee says the law kills babies by forcing more mothers to illegally dump their newborns. The number of baby box drop-offs has more than quadrupled since the law passed. Lee has folders full of letters from desperate mothers who left their babies with him, often depressed and even suicidal.

Lee's church records reveal one in four mothers retrieve the babies. The remaining children are sent to shelters where many are adopted by overseas couples. Local adoptions are rare because of the stigma attached to unwanted babies.

Through the eyes of single mums battling the odds in South Korea, 101 East explores their struggle to hold onto their babies and their dignity.

    * * *

10 Days in North Korea. Inside the most isolated country in the world

    47:33

    More films about Asia:
RT takes an exclusive look at North Korea, the world’s most closed-off country. Life here is isolated from the outside world and every aspect of existence is regulated by order of the Great Leader, from the art you’re allowed to see, the books you can read, even to your hairstyle.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is perhaps the least known country in the world today. Based on a political ideology known as ‘Juche’, the socialist government controls every source of information and the national leader, Kim Jong-un, preserves the peace and defends the state’s historical, spiritual and cultural heritage. It’s hard to overestimate the Commander-in-chief’s role in the country: his likeness adorns the streets and squares in every city and village. Through official portraits and statues, he is, literally, everywhere and kindergarten children are taught to sing his praises. Locals adore Kim Jong-un and consider him the Father of the Nation, he encourages everyone to be patriotic and surpass all other nations.
Almost 15% of North Korea’s GDP is reserved for military spending, and long after the Korean War of the 1950s, the country has still not signed a peace treaty with its capitalist southern neighbor. As a result, thousands of families were torn apart by the political divide. The army remains a source of inspiration; it determinates the social structure and stimulates ordinary people to devote their lives to work in the faithful service of the Marshal. The people believe that this military ideology consolidates national spirit and guarantees stability and order.
However, not even tough military methods and an ideological barrier around the country can solve the economic lag or the enormous social and economic gulf between South and North Korea. Self-reliance and self-sufficiency are in stark contrast to the economic reality. Despite developments in labour cooperation, a demilitarized zone, demarcated by a huge wall between the two states, is still amongst the most heavily armed areas in the world.
President of the Korean Friendship Association, Alejandro Cao de Benos explains that due to the generally accepted ideology of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the people will never understand nor accept a western mind-set. From childhood, they are taught to be loyal to their leader and to beware of western values.
For most viewers North Korea remains a mystery but this unique film offers a limited window of opportunity to view Korean lifestyle through the prism of North Korean peoples’ every day cares and joys. RT Doc meets ordinary workers and soldiers to hear first hand, how they lived before being isolated from the whole world.

Little Big Dreams - Real Stories

    50:00

Not even ten years-old, the youngest only three, some have even yet to learn how to tie their shoe laces. Others have never left their parents’ sides. But all of these children have left their hometowns to travel to a boarding school faraway to pursue a dream, the Olympic dream. Every year, the children look forward to the annual provincial competition, a platform for them to be selected by the national gymnastic squad to further their training. More than 100 children, aged between three and ten years come from all over China to the infamous Li Xiaoshuang Gymnastic School to live their dream. We hear from the parents, visit their homes and ask them what has motivated them to sacrifice their children’s childhood and to take them away from the heart of the family at such a tender age.

101 East - South Koreas Hangover

    25:01

You might be surprised to know that the biggest alcohol consumers are in South Korea.

South Koreans drink twice as much liquor as Russians and they consume more alcohol than any other nation.

Soju, a fermented-rice spirit, is king, with more than seven million bottles consumed every night.

Drinking is treated as the social lubricant to build workplace camaraderie, secure business deals and to earn trust.

But with an estimated 1.6 million alcoholics, and the social costs to health reaching $20bn a year, 101 East asks whether the cap can be put back on the Soju bottle.

A school has been set up to help the defectors adjust to their new life despite opposition from local residents who saw communists as having horns or being scary, or indeed being criminals. As the principal of the school says everything is a challenge, from physical ailments caused by famine to having to unlearn a lifetime's worth of indoctrination. Many fled because the famine proved too much to bear. Around 80% have seen close relatives starve. The school does what it can to help these people adjust but the culture shock as the school's Director describes it, is vast. We can only hope that having survived the famine, they can now survive their free and competitive new home.

    Chinas policy on North Korea

    Support CaspianReport through Patreon:

SINGAPORE - While officials in Washington and Pyongyang exchange threats against one another, the People's Republic of China has remained remarkably silent on the matter. It is a common misconception that Beijing has full control over Pyongyang.

Thus, when President Trump turns to President Xi to solve the Korean issue, which shows a lack of options for the Americans, it raises the question of what determines China’s policy on North Korea.
