Happiness is all in your mind: Gen Kelsang Nyema at TEDxGreenville 2014

    15:56

Simple, profound truths are the realm of this Buddhist nun. Her message? The gift of happiness truly lies within our own hearts and minds. Gen Kelsang Nyema, exuding a peacefulness that immediately connects with the audience, starts by asking three questions: Are you having a good day? Why? Tomorrow, would you rather have a good day or a bad day? She teaches that we cannot put our happiness at the whim of other people and of circumstances. If we want to be happy, we have to stop outsourcing our happiness to other people and cultivate a source of inner peace. What happens next is quite astounding. The whole crowd of 350+ people proceeds to meditate with Nyema. There's a little squirming at first, but as she leads the audience through a calm citation of how to rest the mind, audience members feel a collective relaxation flow into the room and through the people. Fascinating! Refreshing.

This talk was part of TEDxGreenville UNZIPPED, held April 11, 2014, at the Kroc Center in Greenville, South Carolina. For more information about Gen Nyema and her co-presenters, please visit

How do plants keep their feet on the ground when in space | Franck Anicet Ditengou | TEDxPadova

Come reagiscono i vegetali all’assenza di gravità?

Can You Catch Yourself? | Christy Vincent | TEDxUCO

    12:39

We all have ways of being in the world. Sometimes those work for us, but sometimes, they work to our detriment by keeping us from new insights and by allowing us to repeat unwanted behavior in our relationships. Dr. Christy Vincent, a business and professional coach, demonstrates how we can catch ourselves before we become our own stumbling block.

Dr. Christy Vincent is a professor in the Mass Communication Department at the University of Central Oklahoma, where she teaches organizational and strategic communication courses. Her research interests include conflict management, mediation, change management, executive coaching, and training and development. Her interest in conflict management led her to the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law, where she earned a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

Christy is a communication specialist. Using her years of experience in organizational effectiveness and conflict management, she coaches individuals to increase their leadership effectiveness. While she has coached individuals in all roles, one of her specialties is working with young directors who are being groomed for higher-level positions. She particularly enjoys coaching young women leaders, who are building both careers and families at the same time. Christy helps her clients improve in essential behaviors such as managing time, setting priorities, uncovering values, working through conflict, coping with stress and managing multiple roles. She regularly conducts training courses for local corporations. Dr. Vincent’s professional experience outside of the university is in organizational development, management, sales and product development in private industry.

    9:59

You already possess the tool you need to control your own happiness. Emma Seppälä explores the science behind harnessing your state of mind and how it can ultimately lead to success.

“Thank you for giving me my life back,” shared one veteran who was helped by Emma Seppälä, Ph.D., to overcome trauma during a study that used non-traditional ways to help veterans successfully cope with post-traumatic stress disorder. In her new book, The Happiness Track, Dr. Seppälä shares how to apply the science of happiness in one’s life in order to accelerate success (emmaseppala.com/book/). As it turns out, happiness is not as elusive as it once seemed. Using findings from cognitive psychology and neuroscience, Dr. Seppälä simplifies happiness so that anyone can enjoy it. As the Science Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, Dr. Seppälä is a “leading expert on health psychology, well-being, and resilience.” She’s a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, Psychology Today and Scientific American Mind. She’s the founder and editor-in-chief of Fulfillment Daily, a news site dedicated to the science of happiness.

Alison Ledgerwood joined the Department of Psychology at UC Davis in 2008 after completing her PhD in social psychology at New York University. She is interested in understanding how people think, and how they can think better. Her research, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, investigates how certain ways of thinking about an issue tend to stick in people's heads. Her classes on social psychology focus on understanding the way people think and behave in social situations, and how to harness that knowledge to potentially improve the social world in which we all live.

The art of seduction | Seema Anand | TEDxEaling

    14:38

The ancient arts of Courtesanery and Seduction were once treated as high philosophy, with divine and academic associations. Dr. Seema Anand explores how these narratives have been lost and in the evolution of their vocabulary, the implications have changed. Working with the range of what 'story' can mean to an individual Seema facilitates the learning processes of 'telling', 'listening', 'acknowledging' and 'rejecting' the narratives that make up our lives and our social interactions to enhance communication, build links and open dialogue.

Jacob Barnett is an American mathematician and child prodigy. At 8 years old, Jacob began sneaking into the back of college lectures at IUPUI. After being diagnosed with autism since the age of two and placed in his school's special ed. program, Jacob's teachers and doctors were astonished to learn he was able to teach calculus to college students.

At age nine, while playing with shapes, Jacob built a series of mathematical models that expanded Einstein's field of relativity. A professor at Princeton reviewed his work and confirmed that it was groundbreaking and could someday result in a Nobel Prize. At age 10, Jacob was formally accepted to the University as a full-time college student and went straight into a paid research position in the field of condensed matter physics. For his original work in this field, Jacob set a record, becoming the world's youngest astrophysics researcher. His paper was subsequently accepted for publication by Physical Review A, a scientific journal shared on sites such as NASA, the Smithsonian, and Harvard's webpage. Jacob's work aims to help improve the way light travels in technology.

Jacob is also CEO and founder of Wheel LLC, a business he started in his mom's garage, and is in the process of writing a book to help end math phobia in his generation.

Jacob's favorite pastime is playing basketball with the kids at his charity, Jacob's Place. It is a place where kids with autism are inspired every day to be their true authentic selves...just like Jacob.

Thomas has also been an RA at Georgetown for two years, written a regular column for The Hoya, and coached debate for The Bronx High School of Science for four years (his alma matter).

Lesson from Mars: dont fight, explore! | Ilaria Cinelli | TEDxPadova

    8:35

Why is India so filthy? | The Ugly Indian | TEDxBangalore

    17:34

Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel:

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The Ugly Indian is an anonymous collective that does not talk to media, wants no publicity and works with the motto - Only Work No Talk. However, they made an exception for TEDxBangalore so that they could open up the question of why we as Indians are okay with filthy public spaces? The tragedy of the commons - can we change it to the victory of the commons?

There's a silent revolution brewing in India, and it's called The Ugly Indian. It is anonymous, faceless and leaderless, and has seen thousands of citizens coming out to fix local civic problems following a simple motto: Kaam Chalu Mooh Bandh. Only Work No Talk. What started off as a series of social experiments in Bangalore in 2011, to see what it takes to change everyday ugly Indian behaviour in public spaces (littering, spitting paan, public urination and more), has now transformed into a nation-wide movement that is spreading virally – both on social media, and on the ground. The centrepiece of the TUI approach is the 'spotfix ' where ugly spots are 'fixed' by citizens. There is no activism, no sloganeering, no lecturing, no finger-pointing and no ideological debates – just a sincere attempt to solve problems by focusing on a spot - using one's own time, hands and money.
