BULLFIGHTING - ONE OF THE MOST HIDEOUS FORMS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY ON EARTH

    27:25

Animal rights groups condemn Spanish bullfighting bill.
Measure passed by congressional commission designates bullfighting as part of cultural heritage worthy of protection

A decision by a Spanish congressional commission to protect bullfighting by awarding it special cultural status has been condemned by animal rights groups which have decried the use of public funds for unacceptable animal cruelty.

The legislation, which was passed by the congress's culture commission by 24 votes to six, with 14 abstentions, designates bullfighting as part of the cultural heritage worthy of protection throughout the national territory. The bill now goes to a vote in the senate, expected later this month.

The governing rightwing People's party rejected most of the amendments to the proposal put forward by smaller opposition parties who strongly rejected the bill, while the main opposition party, the PSOE, abstained, saying it wanted neither to ban nor promote bullfighting.

A coalition of international animal protection organisations said: Spain's government has signalled its support for unacceptable animal cruelty and the allowance of public funds used to assist the blood sport.

This move is a cynical attempt by a desperate bullfighting industry to secure the future of this dying industry. Bullfighting is cruel and outdated and has no place in a modern society; culture stops where cruelty starts.

The organizations included the Humane Society International, World Society for the Protection of Animals, CAS International, League Against Cruel Sports, Peta and Torture is not Culture.

Marta Esteban, of Torture is not Culture, said: The declaration of bullfighting as cultural patrimony in Spain ... simply aims at the allocation of further public funds to support this decadent activity and to indoctrinate children with education on the 'virtues' of torturing and killing animals for entertainment.

Bullfighting has a long and bloody history going back to the Roman amphitheatres, but its modern incarnation in Spain is usually dated to 1726 when Francisco Romero began fighting on foot with a cape and sword.

Over the years bullrings were introduced to prevent bull or fighter from being cornered, and the event became embedded in Spanish culture. Juan Belmonte is seen as the father of the modern school, popularising the now common practice of drawing the bull close to him with a cape, in the mid-20th century.

But in recent years bullfighting's popularity has dwindled considerably as animal rights groups have raised awareness, leading to permanent bans in Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Figures released by the culture ministry revealed that bullfighting attendance is at an all-time low, and an Ipsos Mori poll this year suggest that 76% of Spaniards opposed the use of public funds to support bullfighting.

    Bullfighting: Cruelty, Not Culture

    3:38

Bullfights are not fair fights between a bull and a matador, but highly staged forms of animal cruelty, sanctioned and subsidized by governments. These outdated spectacles perpetuate the idea that injuring and killing an animal for amusement is acceptable. With attendance at an all-time low and bans enacted by several countries and cities, bullfighting is on the decline; yet events still take place in Spain, France, Portugal, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico. HSI is focusing in particular on ending government use of public funds to support the bullfighting industry. In addition, we are working to end child bullfighting.

GRAPHIC -- Bullfighting Cruelty and Cowardice Exposed

    10:00

It's not a fight -- it's a systematic torture killing that pits a gang of armed thugs against a lone, frightened, wounded animal.

This video exposes the shame of bullfighting, and the cowardice of those involved.

  • Bullfighting Cruelty

    3:38

Bullfighting is a blood sport practiced in cities throughout Spain and several other countries. Hundreds of thousands of bulls die every year.

  • CRUELTY OF RUNNING WITH THE BULLS EXPOSED

    2:45

The same bulls who slip and slide down Pamplona's cobbled streets will be stabbed to death in the town's bullring later that day. Tourists who take part in the run are contributing to the carnage.

This is the sobering message in a new video created by Platform Torture Is Not Culture, sponsored by Animal Guardians, and supported by Europe’s largest animal protection groups including PETA, Humane Society International, CAS International and European offices of World Animal Protection as well as by the International Anti-bullfighting Network, which unites 110 animal protection organisations around the world.

The video, available here, will be translated and distributed throughout the Europe, North America and Asia as a means to put an end to the bloody spectacle.

Many of the thrill-seekers who come to Pamplona to run with the bulls have no idea that they are participating in a festival that celebrates the torture and death of these magnificent animals, and if they did, most would undoubtedly run the other way, says PETA campaign coordinator Kirsty Henderson.
“Putting an end to animal torture in Spain is not only a matter for Spaniards. The EU subsidises bullfighting with more than 150 million euros per year, and this, along with the curiosity of tourists from all around the world, allows this cruel spectacle to continue,” states Marta Esteban, president of Platform Torture is Not Culture (LTNEC) “Only 19% of Spaniards actively support bullfighting, so it is really is a dying industry.”

As shown in the video, each bull used in a fight is repeatedly speared and stabbed before the matador attempts to sever the exhausted animal's spine with a dagger. Sometimes, the bull drowns in his own blood before the dagger comes into play. Other times, he's still alive as his broken, bleeding body is dragged out of the arena and left to await slaughter.

Bullfighting has been on the decline for years, with attendance decreasing and bullrings closing across countries that permit bullfights. The industry survives only because of huge subsidies and tourists who unwittingly fuel the abusive events. A recent poll showed that 76 per cent of Spanish people have no interest in bullfights.

According to scientific studies carried out by the Association of Veterinarians for the Abolition of Bullfighting (AVATMA), the suffering of the bulls starts from the moment they are removed from the fields and put in containers hardly larger than themselves.

“They lose an average of 30 kilos during the transport, usually under extremely high temperatures.” says president of AVATMA, Jose Enrique Zaldívar. He also remarks that the running and the fight produces extreme suffering in the animals who are sedentary and whose organism is not prepared for aerobic exercise. “The strenuous exercise produces an excess of lactic acid in their muscles, which later accumulates in their blood stream and tissues in the form of lactate, provoking metabolic acidosis, an unequivocal parameter for suffering in cattle. This distress is then increased by the fight in the arena, which is an extreme torment for these animals, with a component of physical pain and emotional suffering due to fear.”

The campaign that will be taken to those countries with the most tourists attending the Pamplona Festival has been translated into 8 languages and invites people to write to the City Council of Pamplona and sign a Change.org petition demanding ethical alternatives to bullfighting and a cruelty-free San Fermín Festival

Animal Cruelty: Urban Youths Pioneer New Form of Dog Fighting in Miami - Trunking

    2:04

    Newslink:

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Ten dogs are now safe after they were saved from what is believed to have been part of a cruel trend in dog fighting called trunking.

It's a story that workers at the Miami-Dade Animal Services Department have witnessed way too often.

He has multiple scars to his face and eyes; typical from dog fighting, said Luis Salgado from Miami-Dade Animal Services.

Salgado is referring to a pit bull named Max that was rescued along with five other pit bulls and four puppies in Goulds, the area of 117th avenue and 220th street.

We received an anonymous tip of animal cruelty. We picked them up from a home in cages in back of a home full of urine and feces. Very poor conditions, said Salgado.

The pit bulls are now in Medley at Miami-Dade Animal Services, some still being treated for open wounds and broken bones.

Investigators believe these dogs were being used for fighting, they are also looking into the possibility of trunking, a new type of dog fighting.

Trunking is when you get two dogs put them in trunk with blasting music, drive around for about 10 to 15 minutes when they open the trunk which ever dog is dead or injured unfortunate they are thrown like trash, said Salgado.

The investigation into this animal abuse case is ongoing. Once the owner of the dogs is found, they could be charged with a third-degree felony.

The department is currently in the process of trying to get custody of the dogs to either set them up with a rescue organization or so they could try to get them adopted.

Adoption and ownership of pit bulls, however, is illegal in Miami-Dade County.

  • Greek Animal Torture & the Start of the Poisoning Season

    28

The first photo shows the workings of a evil beast in Crete on 4th November 2008, where the dog has had its back legs tied up and attached to the back of his vehicle and then dragged thing along the road until he has died. This same person is probably responsible for an almost identical incident a while ago.

The next two photos (taken in Firostefani, Santorini) show what happens at the end of each tourist season. It is November, and the start of the mass poisoning that goes on all over mainland Greece and the Islands. The main purpose for poisoned bait is to remove the stray cats and dogs, however, owned cats and dogs cannot discriminate and you will see this is the result. The bait used in these instances was powdered glass

Initially 10 cats and two small cats were found on a terrace a couple of days ago, and the following day, more dead cats and dogs were found on a roof, having consumed powdered glass mixed in with food.

  • Golden eagle attacks and kills deer

    1:33

    Subscribe to ITN News:
Eagles have been known to attack smaller birds, snakes and mammals but it is rare for such an incident to be caught on camera. The Zoological Society of London has released three photographs of a massive golden eagle digging its claws into a sika deer's back, and the pictures have become an online sensation. The rare attack happened in Russia's far east, and the young, but large deer was actually killed by the bird of prey. The proof of that came in the form of a fourth photo, snapped by remote cameras two weeks later.

The deer's mangled carcass was spotted by a researcher as she approached the camera trap to switch the memory cards and change the batteries. The fact that there were no tracks leading up to the dead deer prompted scientists to check the cameras, and that is when they saw the eagle attack. The traps were originally set up in the Lazovsky Nature Reserve to monitor Siberian tigers. Golden eagles do not often attack deer in the wild, which adds even more scientific value to the photos. Report by Mark Morris.

  • Gala of The Royal Horses - Show Footage

    4:19

Gala of The Royal Horses is created, produced and led by world-renowned riding master Rene Gasser, who with the experiences of seven generations has recreated an event only previously seen at the famous riding schools in Vienna and Spain.

The Royal Horses of Europe are some of the most celebrated in history, favoured for centuries by royalty, equestrian riders and bullfighters and this performance will celebrate the tradition, athleticism and grace of these revered creatures.

!The unique qualities of the Royal Horses single them out from all other breeds in the Equine world. Their physical beauty & grace, coupled with exceptional courage and nobility make them an object of admiration and a source of inspiration for horse lovers everywhere, says Gasser.

Along with the magnificent stallions, Spanish flamenco dancers will feature in authentic vibrant costumes accompanied by the mellow notes of a guitar to bring the sights and sounds of Spain a heartbeat away.

In the south of Spain, the tradition of flamenco dancing is rivalled only by the tradition of breeding fine Spanish horses and Rene Gasser says the breeds have been featured in portraits with European royalty, used in multiple movies and are extremely popular among riders.

Gala of The Royal Horses will feature a number of performances involving the Andalusian, Friesian, Lipizzaner and Arabian breeds and the event is dedicated to showing off the amazing beauty and maneuvers these horses are capable of including the stunning maneuvers once used on the battlefield now known as The Airs Above The Ground.
We're going to have horses dancing alongside some tremendous flamenco dancers, and I think people are really going to be excited about watching this, Rene says.

For the last ten years Rene had been touring both in Australia and abroad with his various productions, which include Gala of the Royal Horses, Lipizzaner's With the Stars, Equestra and El Caballo Blanco. Rene is excited to bring an all- new revamped production of Gala of The Royal Horses to audiences across North America.

When Jan said she wasn't sure if they used the American Staffys in dog fighting in the USA, the answer is no, they don't use American Staffys for fighting, they use American Pit Bull Terriers. The reason we don't have pit bull rescue in Australia is because Pit Bull are euthanised.
